Mateen Cleaves Arraigned in Sexual

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office was informed with short notice that instead of arraigning Cleaves tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. that 67th District Court Judge M. Kathy Dowd allowed the defendant to be arraigned this morning. WCPO had the officer in charge of the case contact the defense attorney yesterday to inform him of the arraignment date and time. This morning WCPO requested that the arraignment take place on March 17, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., but the court has decided to go forward with the arraignment this morning. The defendant has received a bond of $150,000 personal bond, and will have his probable cause hearing on March 29, 2016 at 8:30 a.m., and the preliminary examination on April 5, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Dowd.

Prosecutor Worthy said," I don't know how they do things in Genesee County but we try our best to be as transparent as possible when my office is involved. We do not approve of secret proceedings unless it is proscribed by law. There was an agreement with all of the parties that the defendant would turn himself in and be arraigned in open court tomorrow - not for him to have a back door arraignment. The public has a right to know and frankly, I am extremely disappointed that this was handled so clandestinely today. I hope this is not a precursor of things to come.

Arrest Made in Fatal Pedestrian Crash Case

Date: March 25, 2013

A suspect has been charged in connection with a hit and run crash in which a pedestrian was killed.

On Sunday morning, September 26, 2011, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Charles Moynier, a 27 year old Flint Township resident was walking on Torrey Road south of Maple, in Mundy Township, when he was struck and killed by a vehicle that left the scene.

Last week, the Mundy Township Police Department received a tip through the Department website.  Based on the information provided, Detective Mike Neering interviewed several people and obtained information about the driver and vehicle involved in this incident.  A search warrant was obtained to search a garage in Mundy Township.  The search warrant was executed on Friday March 22nd and a vehicle matching the wanted vehicle was located and impounded as evidence.  After the vehicle was located, officers arrested the owner of the vehicle who had been named as a suspect.

The case was presented to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s office and a two count warrant was issued charging Joseph Michael Taylor, a 31 year old Mundy Township resident with 1: Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death When at Fault (Felony – 15 years - $10,000) and 2: Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death (Felony – 5 years - $5,000).  The defendant was arraigned by Judge Steco.  Bond was set at $50,000 and $25,000 on the charges.

Arrest Made in Fatal Crash Case

Date: January 31, 2011

A 29 year old Durand woman was arrested Sunday in connection with a fatal crash in which two people were killed.  Tehea Nicole Young of Durand was arrested following the issuance of a warrant on January 28th charging two counts of manslaughter and two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death.  The charges are the result of an extensive investigation of an accident that occurred on August 17, 2008 at about 12:40 a.m. Detective Mike Neering is the lead investigator in the case. The now disbanded Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (F.A.C.T.) assisted in the investigation. The F.A.C.T unit was disbanding after grant funding for the unit ended.

Stephanie Parks of Durand and Lee Millis of Holly were killed in the accident on northbound I-75 near Maple when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled several times.  Two of the occupants were ejected. Reconstruction of the crash and forensic evidence led to a determination that Young was the driver of the vehicle, resulting in charges.

She was arraigned by Judge Odette today.  Bond was set at $10,000 for each count.  A pretrial hearing is scheduled for February 4th, and the preliminary exam is scheduled for February 9, 2011.

Linden Man Killed in Expressway Crash

Date:  January 4, 2011

On January 4, 2011, at approximately 12:37 a.m., Mundy Township Police Officers, Genesee County Paramedics and Mundy Township Firefighters responded to a crash on southbound US-23 north of Grand Blanc Road.  At the scene they found one vehicle that had left the road and rolled over.  There were three occupants.  The driver, a 27 year old man from Linden was fatally injured.  It appears that he was not wearing a seat belt.

The two passengers, a 28 year old woman and a 40 year old woman received injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.  One of the women, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.  Both women are Fenton residents.

The initial investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling southbound on US-23, collided with the median guardrail, travelled across the southbound lanes,  ran off the right shoulder, struck a tree and then rolling over.  The roads were snow covered at the time.  It is not known if the road conditions or alcohol were a factor in the crash.  The fatal crash reconstruction unit is assisting with the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has information that might be helpful in this investigation is asked to contact the Mundy Township Police Department at (810) 655-4646.
