New Year's Safety

News Years is a time of celebration as we usher out the old and usher in the New. It is a time of making of resolutions and the gatherings on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. It is a time that we make resolutions for what is to come. Let’s make a resolution for the Holiday itself to be safe. Following are some safety tips for the Holiday.

New Year’s Eve

Ø      If you drink don’t drive. If you do celebrate by drinking use a designated driver, call a cab, use a service, stay over night but do not drive.

Ø      If you are driving be aware that the other driver may not be sober. You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Ø      If you using candles, oil burners for scent, or incense; make sure they are properly extinguished. Keep decorations away from open flame sources and keep children away from them.

Ø      Another tip if you are having a party is to make sure the smoke alarms are working properly by checking and changing the battery as necessary. There are products available to check whether or not a smoke detector is working. Remember even thought the battery may work it does not necessarily mean that the detector is functioning properly.

Ø      Fireworks are another issue during this holiday and if used you should check out local and state regulations before using. Remember to keep them away from children and especially with sparklers that emit a lot of heat always supervise their use with an adult. Look at our page on fire works.

New Year’s Day

Ø      Keep handles on the stove away from the reach of children and away from the flame.

Ø      If cooking a turkey and you are using a cooker, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Look at our cooking safety page.
