We, the Mundy Township Police Department, exist to serve all people with respect, fairness, and compassion.  We are committed to the prevention of crime and the protection of life and property; the preservation of peace, order and safety; the enforcement of laws and ordinances; and the safeguarding of Constitutional Guarantees.

To fulfill the mission, the Mundy Township Police Department is dedicated to providing a quality work environment, recognizing the individual worth of each member and the department of its members through effective training and leadership.

Welcome to the Mundy Township Police Department's web site. This site introduces you to the Police Department and the services we provide. The Mundy Township Police Department is made up of dedicated men and women whose primary mission is to deliver excellence in police service.

To accomplish our mission, we work closely with the other departments of the township, other government agencies and the citizens we serve. We are very proud of our reputation and are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors.

Chief James Petres

Chief Petres was appointed Township Marshal in September, 2007.  His police experience includes 34 years with the Northville Police Department and slightly more than one year with the Novi Police Department.

 

His tenure began at the Northville Police Department in November, 1971 as a part-time dispatcher.  In early 1972, he was hired as a full-time cadet.  In the years that followed, he held the positions of Patrolman, Corporal, Lieutenant, Captain.  From this position, he rose through the ranks. to Chief, a position he held for eight years before retiring from the Department.  He then joined the Novi Police Department as the analyst planner.  This position included preparation and administration of the department budget.

 

He has an Associate of Arts degree from Schoolcraft College, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice degree from Wayne State University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Detroit. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University Traffic Institute School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy.

 

The Chief is a Life Member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, the FBI National Academy Associates, and the Chiefs Associations in Genesee, Oakland and Wayne counties.  He serves on the Legislative Committee of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.  He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Northville and as a Boy Scout leader.

 

Married for 25 years, he and his wife have two children.  His interests include travel, RVing, genealogy and occasional attempts at golf.

General Information

The Mundy Township Police Department provides full-time police service to the community. The Department staffing consists of the Township Marshal (Chief), three sergeants, two detectives, twelve full-time police officers, two part-time police officers, one dispatcher, one evidence technician, one transcriptionist/secretary, one part-time clerk and one part-time public service officer.

 

Officers are on duty 24 hours every day to respond to calls for service. The Genesee County 911 Dispatch Center receives calls and dispatches officers. To report a crime, crash or other incident needing police or other emergency assistance, call 911.

 

The office is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The phone number to contact the Department for administrative matters, records information, or to contact the detectives and officers is (810) 655-4646. A direct dial phone to the Dispatch Center is located at the entrance to the police station provides access to police service after business office hours.

 

The detectives follow up on investigations started by patrol officers. They also prepare cases for prosecution and handle cases as they progress through the court process. One patrol officer is assigned to the multi-jurisdictional GAIN auto theft unit.

 

Two officers are assigned as school resource officers. One officer is assigned to the Genesee Intermediate School District Skill Center and another is assigned to the Carmen-Ainsworth Middle School. Funding for these positions is provided by the schools.

 

The Department has an active volunteer program, the Mundy Volunteer Program (MVP). The unit is under the direction of the officer assigned to community policing. Part of the program is the Citizens’ Police Academy, which provides members of the community an opportunity to learn more about the police department and the other criminal justice agencies in the area. While all members of the MVP attend this training before working as a volunteer, becoming a volunteer is not a requirement to attend the Academy.
