Two Suspects Arrested and Charged in Residential Burglary

Date: March 11, 2010

By: Chief James Petres

On Monday, March 8, 2010 at about 2:45 p.m., officers responded to a call of an alarm and possible burglary on O’Connor Court, near Sharp and Hill. Upon arrival, officers found evidence of a burglary.  The home was checked, but no suspects were found.  Tracks were noticed in the snow leading away from the house.  A K-9 unit from the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department responded to assist.

The K-9 team followed the track for a considerable distance, leading to a house on Linden Road.  During this time, another officer who was checking the area for suspects, noticed suspicious activity at the same house.  After the K-9 had followed the track to the house, two suspects were identified and arrested.

After follow up work, the case was presented to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s office.  On Wednesday, warrants were authorized charging the two suspects with home invasion in the second degree.  Those charged were Gavin James Bolen and Donnie Arthur Randolph, both 17 years of age.  Randolph was released pending the issuance of the warrant.  Bolen was lodged in the county jail.  He has been arraigned and bond was set at $5,000.

In addition to the help of the Sheriff’s Department K-9, a resident contacted the officers while they were tracking the suspects and provided valuable information that assisted in identifying one of the suspects.  The assistance and cooperation were greatly appreciated.

Disabled Motorist Killed in Freeway Crash

Date: September 15, 2009

By: Chief James Petres

At about 11:30 a.m. today, a 54 year old man from Ann Arbor was killed in a crash on northbound US-23 between Baldwin and Torrey Roads.

The crash involved three vehicles and the victim who was standing on the shoulder.  The victim had returned to his disabled vehicle with another motorist.    The other motorist was in a vehicle behind the disabled vehicle and the victim was standing alongside the passenger side of the disabled vehicle.  A passing truck veered from the traffic lane on to the shoulder and sideswiped both vehicles.  The victim was thrown against the guardrail and suffered fatal injuries.  The truck then struck the guardrail and came to rest after sliding along the guardrail a short distance.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.  The freeway was closed to traffic until about 2:20 p.m.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Suspect Charged in Abuse of Elderly Woman

Date: October 3, 2008

By: Chief James Petres

A warrant was issued Wednesday, October 1, 2008 for Dale Alder, a 43 year old Mundy resident charging him with CSC I and vulnerable elder abuse.  Alder was the care giver for a 94 year old woman.  The victim was taken to a local hospital on Saturday.  The doctors determined that the victim had suffered a traumatic brain injury and that she was the victim of a sexual assault.

The suspect was arrested Sunday and has been arraigned on the charges. The CSC I charge is punishable by a life term and the vulnerable adult abuse is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. Bond was set at $95,000 and he is still in custody in the county jail.

While the victim’s condition was serious and she was in ICU, she has recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

The quick apprehension of the suspect was the result of initiative on the part of Officer Tim Cook in his efforts to locate the suspect after the complaint was received. Detective Mike Neering conducted the follow up investigation that provided valuable evidence that resulted in these charges.  The commendable work of the officers brought a dangerous person to justice and likely saved an elderly victim from further serious injury.
